ST. JOHN’S

REV. DONALD J. HARRINGTON, C.M. P R E S I D E N T, S T. J O H N ’ S U N I V E R S I T Y Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., assumed the Presidency of St. John’s University in 1989. As the 15th President of one of the largest Catholic universities in the United States, he has provided leadership for an ambitious initiative to position the institution as a leader in higher education for the 21st century. His vision has resulted in an extraordinary transformation of the University into a “new” St. John’s, with enhanced facilities, expanded academic initiatives, and an increasing global presence. The vision has been enabled by Fulfilling the Dream, a capital campaign that ended in May 2006, exceeding its goal and raising more than $271 million, the largest amount ever realized by a Catholic institution in New York State. Already completed are several new buildings, including St. Thomas More Church, the gift of alumnus John V. Brennan and his wife, Anita, which stands at the center of the Queens campus; DaSilva Hall, a state-of-the-art classroom building, which opened in September 2004 on the Staten Island campus; and Taffner Field House, which is located adjacent to Carnesecca Arena on the Queens campus and named for alumnus Donald Taffner and his wife Eleanor, an honorary alum and member of the University’s Board of Trustees. These projects complement others that have been completed within the last five years, including a 2,500 seat soccer stadium, named for trustee and longtime benefactor Jerome Belson; and the Kelleher Center, a multipurpose building on the University’s Staten Island campus, named for trustee Denis Kelleher and his wife. Academic initiatives include new degree programs on both the graduate and undergraduate levels and implementation of a new universitywide core curriculum. In order to assure that students acquire technological proficiency, all incoming first-year students receive laptop computers that can be used on the wireless network that covers all indoor and outdoor areas on each of the University’s campuses. The laptop initiative, launched in 2003, is the largest of its kind in the U.S. Intel Corporation recognized St. John’s advanced use of technology by naming the University to its list of “Top 10 Unwired Colleges” in both 2004 and 2005. While expanding its outreach through technology, the University has also increased its physical presence within the metropolitan area and beyond. In fall 1995, St. John’s opened its third

campus and first international site – The Graduate Center in Rome, Italy in facilities provided by the Vatican. A decision to develop a fourth campus on Eastern Long Island was implemented in summer 1999 with the purchase of the 175-acre La Salle Center in Oakdale. A fifth campus was acquired in December 2000 when the College of Insurance, located in Manhattan, was consolidated into St. John’s. In spring 2007 the University launched its new study abroad program for undergraduates – Discover the World. Plans are to establish sites across the globe. A site in Paris was opened in 2008 in a beautifully restored historic building complex located in the St. Germain district. Study at this site is included as part of the semester-long Discover Europe program, which provides an opportunity for students to study and live in Paris, Rome, and either Salamanca or Dublin and to combine classroom instruction with cultural activities and a component unique to the program – the opportunity to engage in service activities. Perhaps the most transformative aspect of the University’s impressive growth has been the transition to residence life, created through construction of six residence halls. The first three buildings, one of them named for John Cardinal O’Connor, the beloved prelate of the Archdiocese of New York, were completed in August 1999. Two more halls were opened in September 2000, and one additional building, named for alumnus, benefactor, and former Chairman of Mellon Bank Corporation Thomas Donovan, was opened in September 2002. Complementing the residence hall complex is a dining facility named for alumnus and trustee William Montgoris, retired CFO of Bear, Stearns. The residence

2

halls were supplemented in 2005 by acquisition of two complexes on Union Turnpike that provide off-campus housing in apartment style facilities. Apartment style living accommodations are also available in buildings adjacent to the Staten Island campus. Shortly after his ordination as a Vincentian priest in 1973, Father Harrington was assigned to Niagara University, which, like St. John’s, is sponsored by the Vincentians. He served as Instructor in Religious Studies, as Director of Student Activities, and as Executive Vice President before being named the institution’s 22nd president – at 38 years of age, the youngest ever appointed. Father Harrington has amassed a striking record of community and professional activity. He completed three terms as a trustee of Niagara University, two terms on the Board of Directors of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU), and six years on the Board of Trustees of Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, N.Y. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) within the State of New York. Born in Brooklyn, Father Harrington attended Our Lady Help of Christians elementary schools in that borough, where he was educated by the Sisters of Charity (Halifax). He graduated from Manhattan’s Regis High School in 1963. He then entered the junior college seminary of the Vincentian Fathers in Princeton, N.J, before completing his studies for the priesthood at Mary Immaculate Seminary in Northampton, Pa. He pursued graduate studies at the Catholic University of America and the University of Toronto. Father Harrington holds honorary doctorates from several colleges and universities in the United States, including Niagara University, St. Thomas Aquinas College, and The Catholic University of America and has also been honored by such international institutions as Fu Jen University in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China; the American University in Rome, Italy; and Kokushikan University in Tokyo, Japan. He was awarded the honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by His Holiness Pope John Paul II in 1989 and was named a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre in 1999. He received the Order of Merit (Cavalieri) of the Republic of Italy in June 2003 and the Grand Ufficiale in October 2003.

CHRIS MONASCH DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Now in the sixth year providing leadership for his alma mater’s athletics program, Chris Monasch oversees St. John’s 17 varsity sports and leads the University’s Strategic Plan for Athletics, including development, facilities, marketing, communications, corporate relations and NCAA compliance. Monasch oversees St. John’s 17 varsity sports programs and leads the University’s Strategic Plan for Athletics, including development, facilities, marketing, communications, corporate relations and NCAA compliance. Monasch has made a considerable impact in every area of St. John’s Department of Athletics during his tenure. He has overseen the hiring of key personnel in the Athletic Development, Sports Marketing and Athletic Communications areas. He also created several new assistant coaching positions for women’s sports programs, in alignment with the University’s commitment to gender equity. Significant facility upgrades have been made during Monasch’s tenure, including the construction of The Courts at St. John’s and various improvements at the newly-named Jack Kaiser Baseball Stadium, which honors one of Monasch’s most distinguished predecessors. Monasch is currently spearheading the multi-phase fundraising and renovation plan for the modernization of venerable Carnesecca Arena - which received significant changes already in Phases I, II and III of the initiative, houses most of St. John’s Athletics Department and serves as the on-campus home for the University’s storied basketball programs. Phase II renovations in the 2008 offseason included a new playing surface, an overhauled seating bowl with 800 chairback seats, and enhanced ticketing and lobby areas. The installation of a high-resolution video scoreboard and sound system, a refurbishing of the arena ceiling, and a new highdefinition lighting system were among the series of Phase III changes Red Storm fans enjoyed during the 2009-10 hardwood seasons. Monasch has implemented an athletics department philosophy of “Win, Graduate, Serve,” which begins with a newly-created annual orientation program for all incoming student-athletes. St. John’s Student Development staff provides academic support and guides community service and leadership efforts in Carnesecca Arena’s four-year-old, state-of-the-art Student-Athlete Center for Excellence. Annual giving to St. John’s Athletics and the number of members in the Red White Club have markedly increased since his arrival, with the addition of development events such as the annual Bullpen Winter Banquet, benefiting the Red Storm baseball team. Monasch has overseen several special events related to the storied men’s basketball program, such as Legacy Honors Weekend (2006), the Joe Lapchick Symposium (2006), the year-long 100 Years of St. John’s Basketball celebration (2007-08) and the 25th Anniversary of St. John’s 1985 Final Four run last season (2009-10). .In 2009-10, the St. John’s athletics program posted another year of achievement under Monasch’s leadership. • The men’s soccer team won a conference-record eighth BIG EAST Tournament crown. Head coach Dr. Dave Masur’s Red Storm squad was rewarded with its 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in history, earning the No. 13 national seed and a first round bye. • The women’s soccer team earned its first-ever national top 25 ranking, en route to the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. 2009 NSCAA Northeast Region Coach of the Year Ian Stone’s team posted the second-most wins ever for the Red Storm women’s soccer program. • On the volleyball court, sophomore Darlene Ramdin and freshman Gabriela Petkova notched St. John’s top 10 single-season records for kills and assists, respectively. • During cross country season, senior Sarah Fry, a walk-on student-athlete, led the team with a new career-best performance at the ECAC Championships. • St. John’s nationally-ranked fencing teams set the tone for the winter sports season, as 10 Red Storm fencers earned All-America honors, to lead Yury Gelman’s squad to a second-place finish at the NCAA National Championships. Daryl Homer and Marat Israelian each captured individual NCAA titles on the men’s side, while Dagmara Wozniak - the No. 13 women’s sabre fencer in the world - and Evginya Kirpicheva led the way on the women’s side with a third-place national finish.

• The 2009-2010 season was one of the most successful in history for the women’s basketball team, as New York City metro coach of the year Kim Barnes Arico led her squad to 25 wins - the most since 1983 - and a secondround appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Keyed by AP honorable mention All-American Da’Shena Stevens, the team finished the year ranked in both Top 25 Polls for the first time ever, and posted its biggest win in program history by defeating then-No. 4/3 Notre Dame on Feb. 16. • The men’s basketball team posted a 17-16 record, winning the most games since the 2002-03 season, and earning the program’s 27th berth to the Postseason NIT, a national record. Former UCLA coach and ESPN analyst Steve Lavin was named the 19th head coach in program history on March 30. • The indoor track and field teams enjoyed an outstanding winter. Junior Priscilla Frederick earned All-America status by finishing eighth in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The team had 12 different scorers in the Indoor BIG EAST Championships in six different events, and broke a 19-year school record in the 4 x 800-meter relay. • The St. John’s baseball team advanced to its 33rd NCAA Tournament, defeating VCU, then-No. 22 Mississippi and then-No. 1 Virginia before falling in the Charlottesville Regional title game. The Red Storm also defeated then-No. 18 Connecticut to win its conference-record sixth BIG EAST Tournament crown. Jeremy Baltz was named the NCBWA and Louisville Slugger Freshman Player of the Year and became the first St. John’s player to earn All-America status from the ABCA, Baseball America, Louisville Slugger and the NCBWA in the same season. Head coach Ed Blankmeyer, selected to the coaching staff of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team prior to the season, recorded his 500th career win and led the team to a schoolrecord 43-win campaign. • On the softball diamond, All-BIG EAST second team catcher Kacee Cox’s .404 batting average, nine home runs, 46 RBI, .649 slugging percentage and .471 on-base percentage ranked in the top five of those respective categories in Red Storm history. Freshman second baseman Amber Curry recorded 20 stolen bases, the third-most by a St. John’s player all-time. Amy Kvilhaug’s St. John’s team posted a memorable 2-0 shutout win over BIG EAST Conference Regular Season co-champion and NCAA Tournament participant DePaul on April 14. • The men’s lacrosse team opened the season at 2-0 for the second straight year and finished with five victories. Senior Tom Manes earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors in the team’s first league win over Rutgers, in the inaugural season for the BIG EAST lacrosse conference. Manes and sophomore Harry Kutner were named All-BIG EAST second team at the conclusion of the season. • During the outdoor track season, Priscilla Frederick broke her own school record as she leapt to 1.84 meters and won the high jump at the Outdoor ECAC Championships. Frederick went on to earn her second All-America designation of the year, finishing sixth in the high jump at the Outdoor NCAA Championships. • On the links, the St. John’s men’s squad posted six top-five team finishes this season. Redshirt junior and all-conference honoree Evan Beirne tied for second at the BIG EAST Championship, and All-BIG EAST selection Mike Ballo Jr. was named BIG EAST Golfer of the Month for October. The St. John’s women notched six top-five finishes, including a victory at the Sacred Heart Fall Classic. • On the tennis court, BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Mike Lampa finished at 18-2 in singles play, the best individual record since 2006, and led the Red Storm to an 8-0 undefeated home slate. The women’s tennis team posted a 5-2 record among conference foes in regular season play, and Sophomore Joanna Zwirbulis had a team-best 10-match win streak for St. John’s, including four league victories. St. John’s student-athletes excelled in the classroom during the 2009-10 academic year. In addition to the 168 members of the Athletics Department’s Honor Roll, 84 student-athletes that boast a grade point average of 3.5 or better, several individuals and teams achieved noteworthy honors: • Steve Forster of the baseball team and Renee Cloutier of the women’s golf team were selected St. John’s BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar-Athletes of the Year, each earning a $2,000 scholarship for graduate school. • Women’s soccer players Kelly McConnell and Amanda Pasciolla were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team.

3

• Joy McCorvey of the women’s basketball team and Gavin Buckley of men’s lacrosse were named candidates for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award, which celebrates a four-year athlete’s excellence in character, the classroom, the community, and in competition. Buckley was selected as a finalist. • Renee Cloutier of the women’s golf team was recognized by the BIG EAST with the 2009 sport excellence award, recognizing her as the top scholarathlete competing in women’s golf. • Joel Gustafsson of the men’s soccer team was selected to the NSCAA Scholar All-East Region Team for the second consecutive year. • On March 5, 2010, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named the Red Storm cross country squad to their all-academic team. This is the fourth-consecutive season that the cross country team has earned this honor. St. John’s student-athletes continue to be extremely active members of the community - on campus, in the greater New York City area, and beyond. Red Storm student-athletes contributed nearly 1,900 community outreach hours during the 2009-10 academic year. Monasch, 51, was named the fifth Athletic Director in St. John’s University history on February 1, 2005. He has spent his entire career in collegiate athletics, serving in various leadership capacities for more than 25 years and has a résumé that touches some 30 institutions. He has served as commissioner of the America East and Northeast Conferences, as well as Assistant and Associate Athletic Director at Fordham and Seton Hall Universities, respectively. He has experience with complex issues such as NCAA governance, compliance, student development and academic support, and is known as a visionary administrator. Monasch spent 1997-2004 as Commissioner of the America East Conference, leading that organization in implementing a NCAA compliance program, developing a marketing program and organizing the league’s television network. Monasch created the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and restructured the league governance process to empower the member institutions’ presidents as its chief governing body. Monasch also oversaw the addition of four new members to the conference and brought the conference to the highest level of athletic success in its history. .Prior to his tenure at the AEC, Monasch served as the first full-time Commissioner of the Northeast Conference, a position he held for nine years. He extricated the league from the ECAC in the late 1980s, changing its name from the ECAC Metro Conference, expanded league membership, added Division I-AA football to its sports sponsorship list and developed its television network. Monasch has been a member of several NCAA committees, including the NCAA Management Council, the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee, the Recruiting Committee and the Division I Baseball Committee, on which he still serves. He has been an advocate for student-athletes, serving two terms as liaison with the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He served as chair of the Division I Management Council during the 2004-05 academic year, and currently serves on the NACDA Sears Cup Board of Directors. .Monasch began his career as an Assistant Athletic Director at Fordham University, a role he filled for four years before serving as the school’s interim athletic director in 1985, where he also started the school’s first academic support program. As an Associate Athletic Director at Seton Hall University, Monasch was a key player in the athletic department’s upgrade that led to a men’s basketball Final Four appearance and the move of its games to the Meadowlands. Monasch is currently the chair of the BIG EAST finance committee and serves on the Advisory Board of the National Consortium of Academics and Sports. He also contributes on the Advisory Board for the Sport Management program and the College of Professional Studies at St. John’s. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Seton Hall University School of Law and St. John’s University. Monasch is a St. John’s alumnus, graduating with a B.S. in athletic administration in 1981. In addition to his degree from St. John’s, Monasch holds a M.A. in communications from Fordham University (1984) and a Juris Doctorate from Seton Hall University (1993). He is a member of the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Bar Associations. Monasch currently resides in Manhattan.

ST. JOHN’S

FACTS AND HIGHLIGHTS One of America’s leading Catholic universities, St. John’s continues in its prominent role — that of preparing young men and women to make a positive difference in the global community through leadership and service. Founded by the Vincentian Community in 1870, St. John’s embraces the principles of St. Vincent de Paul, who was committed to serving those less fortunate wherever they are found. While providing a quality higher education, St. John’s not only promotes the ideals of service, both locally and globally, but also integrates those ideals into its programs and the daily lives of its students. When St. John’s opened its doors, the University mainly served the children of New York City’s immigrant communities, who had little access to a quality higher education. Today, with an increasingly global reach, St. John’s offers students from all walks of life the opportunity to excel in a diverse atmosphere of mutual respect and common purpose.

MISSION

A Catholic, Vincentian and metropolitan University that embraces the Judeo-Christian ideals of respect for the rights and dignity of every person, as well as each individual’s responsibility for the world in which we live.

PRESIDENT

Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M.

APPLICATIONS

New freshmen applications have continued to increase, approximately doubling since 2005, and exceeding 50,000 in 2009.

SAT SCORES

In 2008, the average SAT score for admitted St. John’s students rose to 1087.

Rico, the District of Columbia and U.S. Virgin Islands and 122 countries. .Hispanic (12.5 percent), African-American (12.7 percent) and Asian (14.6 percent) students constituted approximately 40 percent of the University’s 2008 enrollment. .During the 2008-09 academic year, 95 percent of St. John’s students received more than $358 million in financial assistance through scholarships, work-study programs, loans and grants.

FACULTY

Nearly 90 percent of our 1,520 full-time faculty members hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in their field. The University offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs, including 12 doctoral programs. With our low 17:1 student-faculty ratio, St. John’s offers personal attention for every student.

CAMPUSES

Our green, 96.5-acre Queens campus features six ultramodern residence halls with lounges, study rooms and fitness facilities; three-story townhouse-style residences accommodating 289 students; and a residence dining hall. Near the Queens campus on Union Turnpike are the Seton Complex and DePaul Houses — modern, apartment-style residences for graduate, law school and select upper-class students. The 16.5-acre Staten Island campus features modern, apartment-style student residences adjacent to campus. Additionally, limited student housing is available at our 10-story Manhattan campus. Our 175-acre Oakdale, N.Y., campus is a center for higher education on Long Island. Overlooking the Great South Bay, the campus offers a Master’s in Library Science and a Master of Science in School Psychology, along with professional certificates, master’s and doctoral degree programs in education. Celebrating 14 years with a campus in Rome, Italy, St. John’s recently moved its to a new, modern facility in the Prati section. Centrally located near the Vatican, the fourstory, 75,000-square-foot building features eight high-tech classrooms, a student and faculty lounge, 200 resident beds, a chapel, library, courtyard, campus ministry and administrative offices. St. John’s also opened a new learning center in Paris, France. Housed within the newly-renovated Maison-Mere, the sixstory structure contains approximately

STUDENTS

Total enrollment in 2008 of 20,109 fulland part-time undergraduate and graduate students at campuses in Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan, NYC; in Oakdale, NY; and in Rome, Italy. St. John’s student body comprises 14,816 undergraduate and 5,293 graduate students from 44 states, Puerto

20,000 square feet of space with residences, classrooms, offices and support space. The facility is close to all major cultural and artistic landmarks. .All campuses offer full access to the University-wide wireless network.

GLOBAL STUDIES

.Preparing students to make the world a better place is a big part of a St. John’s education. The University’s growing Global Studies options allow students to live, learn and serve others in a wide range of locations around the world. St. John’s continues to expand its popular summer and winter Global Studies programs. For example, in summer 2008, the University added its first study abroad option in Russia, along with programs in Argentina, Bermuda, China, England, France, Guatemala, Spain and Vietnam. Winter options include Berlin, Egypt, India, Paris, Rome and the Galápagos Islands. .While Global Studies has long played a role in the St. John’s experience, the program grew considerably with the launch of Discover the World. For example, Discover the World Europe allows students to study abroad in three international cities in a single semester, offering a multi-faceted perspective on European culture and politics. Students also can spend a semester in Rome and Paris, each a vibrant metropolis that embodies European art, culture and history. Students are immersed in the rich culture, language and history in each location, with multiple opportunities to serve the poor and disadvantaged. Exciting new academic cohorts also enhanced Global Studies at St. John’s. Last May, for example, 13 St. John’s students participated in “Discover Bermuda: Adaptive Ecosystem Management, Sustainability and Socioeconomic Issues.” Through the three-credit, multidisciplinary course, a diverse group of students explored Bermuda’s ecology, sociology, history and environmental challenges. .Last January, 39 second-year Pharm. D. students began a semester abroad as part of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Profession’s first Discover the World cohort. The entire group spent the semester studying in Rome, Paris and Salamanca, Spain, energized by their new surroundings and learning about their chosen field from a fresh perspective.

In 2009-10, the team won its third straight Metropolitan Outdoor Championship, totaling 170 points and six event wins. The team came in fourth place at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships. Then-junior Priscilla Frederick had a benchmark season, earning All-American status twice at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, finishing eighth and sixth respectively. Frederick also competed at the USA Outdoor Championships and won the ECAC Championships with a school recordbreaking high jump. Along with competing in the high jump, Frederick was an All-BIG EAST honoree in the pentathlon (indoor) and heptathlon (outdoor). The 4x800-meter relay team of Kim Piard, Sarah Sudbury, Pamela Petruski and Alexis Bean set a new school record time at the Indoor BIG EAST Championships. In 2008-09, the track & field team won its second consecutive Metropolitan Outdoor Championship, tallying 223 points and bringing home 10 individual titles: thensenior Phobay Kutu-Akoi (100 meter and 200 meter), then-junior Asia Davy (400-meter hurdles), then-sophomore Priscilla Frederick (high jump), then-freshman Chanel King (shot put and discus), and the 4x100-meter, 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter relay teams. Hurt’s team finished second the Metropolitan Indoor Championship as Frederick (high jump and pentathlon), then-sophomore Bintou Dibba (long jump) and Kutu-Akoi (60-meter) all won individual championships. Frederick competed in the Indoor USA Championship where she placed sixth in the high jump, and

the Indoor NCAA Championship, finishing in 14th place. Freshman Aryon Trujillo ran in the USA Jr. Cross Country Championship, placing 57th. In 2008, St. John’s had 31 BIG EAST qualifiers, 18 ECAC qualifiers, seven All-BIG EAST athletes and 12 All-East athletes. Red Storm athletes set a total of four new school records on the season. Under Hurt’s leadership, St. John’s athletes have competed in nearly every major track & field competition in the world including the Olympic Games in 2004 (Athens), 2000 (Sydney), 1996 (Atlanta), World Championships in Sweden, Japan, Ireland, Poland, Canada, and Spain, Pan American Games in Canada and Argentina, the World Student Games in Spain, and the Caribbean Games in Barbados and Guatemala. Red Storm athletes have won 18 individual national titles since 1988, producing 12 USA champions, two Irish national champions, a Jamaican national champion, a Dominican Republic national champion and a Caribbean champion. Since 1991, Hurt’s teams have earned 15 NCAA All-American honors and 16 individuals who have competed in the Olympic trials. During Hurt’s 21-year tenure of coaching the middle and long distance runners, he has guided 17 NCAA qualifying performers as well as NCAA All-American cross country runner Bob Reid, 3k All-American Chris Fogarazzo, and 5k and 10k All-Americans Chris Graff and John Honerkamp, the latter who became the youngest semifinalist at the 1996 USA Olympic Trials and placed sixth in the USA Indoor Nationals in the 800-meter run. Thirteen of Hurt’s distance medley, 800-meter and 1,500-meter relay teams have ranked in the top 10 nationally, 68 distance runners have won All-East recognition. Hurt’s athletes have also won BIG EAST titles in the 800-meters, the mile, the 3K steeplechase and the 10,000-meter. Since 1982, 48 school records have been established in the distance events under Hurt’s guidance. In 1996, the men’s cross country team placed 17th in the NCAA Championships. Hurt has kept St. John’s committed to a total team philosophy that recruits and develops quality athletes in all event areas. He utilizes a national schedule that has Red Storm teams competing across the country at top venues that afford the highest levels of competition. Historic Van Cortlandt Park is the home for the cross country team, while the world class facility at the 168th Street

6

Armory is home for indoor practice and competitions. The outdoor team uses DaSilva Memorial Field on the Queens Campus, which boasts a state-of-the art 400-meter oval. Hurt’s student-athletes have excelled in the classroom as well as in the athletic arena. Distance runner and 3,000-meter NCAA All-American Fogarazzo won NCAA and BIG EAST postgraduate scholarships, while Georgina Bendana and Te-Mika Warner, who attended Harvard Law School, also won BIG EAST postgraduate scholarships in recent years. Most recently, 27 Red Storm track & field athletes were named to the BIG EAST Academic team in 2009, continuing the tradition of academic excellence in the BIG EAST, while the cross country team earned USTFCCCA All-American honors. Hurt was a prep All-American in 1972, clocking a 4:10 mile at Proviso West High School in Hillside, Ill. At the University of Notre Dame, he captained the cross country and track & field teams and established school records in the three mile run and the mile relay. Following graduation in 1976, Hurt competed for the University of Chicago Track Club and the Oregon Track Club. After attending graduate school at the University of Oregon, Hurt served three years as head track & field coach at Jesuit High School in Portland, Ore. In 1982, Hurt moved to St. John’s to become the cross country and assistant track & field coach. Currently, Hurt serves as the secretarytreasurer of the IC4A Coaches Association and was once president of the BIG EAST Coaches Association. In 1995, he served as distance coach for the East team at the USOC Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo. That same year, Hurt and his staff were also named Staff of the Year in the BIG EAST Conference. In 1996, he was honored as NCAA Region II Cross Country Coach of the Year. In 1989, Hurt earned his master’s degree in government and politics from St. John’s. Hurt currently resides in Glen Cove, N.Y., with his wife Ann. He has two daughters, Kathleen Urtnowski and Cynthia, and son James. He is also the proud grandfather of Cassandra Anne Urtnowski, who was born on Sept. 16, 2007.

She also coached Asia Davy to a title at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Along with Kutu-Akoy, Harrison’s 4x100-meter relay team and 4x200-meter relay team set new school records. Harrison is an accomplished track & field athlete and has competed on both national and international levels, having represented Puerto Rico in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.
