Saint Edward’s School admits students of any race, religion, color, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. It does not discriminate in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, or athletic and other schooladministered programs.

Greetings

FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL MIKE MERSKY

Dear Members of the Saint Edward’s School Community: As we enter the fall semester 2013 at Saint Edward’s, allow me to say how pleased I have been with our opening of the 49th year as a School. It felt incredibly positive on all fronts, and it began back in the middle of August with a two-day Advance Planning session with our Leadership Team, new faculty and staff orientation, a series of faculty meetings, and new student orientations, all within a two-week span. Most important, were the students arriving on the campus, and once again, the energy and enthusiasm of our children make Saint Edward’s School a unique and wonderful school culture. Specifically, I applaud the work of our United Pirates (UP) in the Upper School for their planning, with our admission professionals, in welcoming our new students to the 9th through 12th grades. They spent countless hours organizing throughout the summer, and their work was integral to our mission in terms of student-led initiatives, along with being a community that accepts and supports students and families new to the School. These young people are to be commended for their effort, work, and support. While the school year is well underway, there remains so much for us to celebrate this year. Our enrollment has increased by almost thirty students, and we had a five-year record high of 89 new students enrolled, with our lowest attrition rate in a long time, namely re-enrollments exceeding 93%. Hats off to our admission professionals, division heads and academic dean who all worked throughout the spring and summer interviewing some outstanding candidates for our School. In addition, there are already almost a dozen mid-year applications from families in the process of relocating to our beautiful Treasure Coast area by mid-January. With the successful completion of our accreditation process last year and the culmination of our strategic planning process, our direction as a School is clear, focused, and strong for the next five years. Imperatives such as continued tuition and enrollment management, increased endowed funds for financial aid, strength in faculty and educational programs, focused school community identity with the region at large, and the development of a comprehensive campus master plan are all components of our targeted strategic direction in the next five years. Of particular focus for many of us in the next few years is the raising of significant endowed funds for financial aid. The endowed growth for financial aid will allow the School to be less tuition-driven and will help to control increases in fees, while enabling Saint Edward’s School to support those additional 20-30 new students each year who qualify academically through the admission process. As always, the endowment of a great independent school is a valuable lifeline to stability and to being able to play a significant role in the lives of educating children in any community for generations to come. Having already established the incredible importance of Saint Edward’s School as a key element in this region and in the state, it is time for us as a School to step up and show our support with endowed dollars, which will be used in perpetuity to educate children, while also helping to control our tuition in the foreseeable future. As we are poised to grow and develop exponentially in the ensuing years, I hope you will consider joining us in this initiative as described, which will help complete the financial foundation of Saint Edward’s School long after we are all gone. However, leaving the legacy of educating children in this region by Saint Edward’s School is true stewardship. Further, in terms of my tenure as a Head, I can think of nothing more important as a steward of the School, than to have the mission, values, and influence of our School continue to be integral to the lives of the children in this larger community for decades to come. Please join us in this quest for excellence. Best wishes. Sincerely, Michael J. Mersky Head of School SAINT EDWARD’S SCHOOL

Summer Fun

Saint Edward’s summer camps were once again the place to be during summer vacation.

As always, Water Camp was a favorite with campers, and our new Specialty Theme Camps were a big hit! Finding Nemo offered campers the opportunity to learn about the Indian River Lagoon and the ocean, go kayaking and pontoon boating. Fishing week campers were on the Indian River Lagoon learning knot tying, new tactics, boating and, of course, fishing. There were two sessions of Harry Potter where the campers made their own wands, edible potions, played “quidditch” and had a sorting ceremony under the Minister of Magic. Hunger Games also had two sessions. These campers learned survival strategies and techniques, practiced archery and traveled to spoil islands for an adventure.

Magic Camp was offered for the fourth time with over 30 campers learning various tricks at three different wand levels.

EXcel, which mixes academics and fun while challenging the mind saw an increase in enrollment by 10 % throughout the three, one-week sessions.

CAMILLE GREENE AND THE ACADEMIC LEARNING LAB by Linda Konrad

Stroll through the front doors of the Peter B. Benedict Library, take an immediate right and enter a world apart from the rest of the Saint Edward's campus. A large aquarium near the entrance soothes the soul, while pale yellow walls help maintain a cheerful atmosphere. Students sitting at an array of tables are quietly absorbed in laptops and books. There is a sense of compassion and confidence here, thanks to the woman in charge. Welcome to the Academic Learning Lab and the world of Camille Greene.

Camille was given a large but sterile space in the library. She transformed it and named it the Academic Learning Lab or A.L.L., because she wanted all students to know they were welcome to come for academic help. Learning styles, test preparation and test-taking skills are the focus for most students. Kindles, audio books and LiveScribe pens to upload information students write and hear during lectures are among the resources that can be borrowed from the A.L.L. Camille Greene helping students in her Academic Learning Lab.

Camille came to Saint Edward's 24 years ago by way of her husband, Griffin Greene, Class of 1976. The first of their four daughters (Whitney '05, Lyndal '08, Aubrey '09 and Anabelle '17) was about to enter kindergarten, and Griffin had his eye on Saint Edward's. Having worked in Exceptional Education for five years in the Indian River public school system, Camille wasn't convinced Saint Edward's was the right place for Whitney. Griffin persuaded Camille to sit in on a kindergarten class taught by Barbara Mohler, now Head of the Lower School, and Camille says that's the day she became a Pirate. She was so impressed that she volunteered in Barbara's class, then was hired as a part-time aid. The next year, Camille became an SES kindergarten teacher. The plan was to stay in that position for a couple of years. Those couple of years turned into 14. "I still feel very attached to the students I taught in Kindergarten," Camille says. "Teaching them to read and opening that world to them was absolutely magical." Barbara convinced Camille to apply for the Learning Support Services Director, and Camille, who has bachelor's and master's degrees in Learning Disabilities and Varying Exceptionalities from Florida State University, was thrilled to get the position. "I absolutely love helping students understand how they learn best and supporting them with the confidence and strategies they need to reach their goals." 8

FALL 2013 WATERMARK

For students with special learning needs, Camille creates a "Learning Prescription." Based on a psychologist's evaluation, the Learning Prescription outlines the student's strengths and weaknesses and the accommodations recommended by the psychologist. The Learning Prescription includes an individualized three-prong plan with student, parent and teacher helping the student reach his or her full potential. Camille becomes the liaison with teachers to ensure accommodations take place. Freshman and sophomores with Learning Prescriptions attend Camille's guided study hall, so she can work with them on a continuing basis.

Camille has been the Learning Support Services Director for five years now. She is proud of the impact it has had on the entire SES community, which now has a greater understanding that all students learn differently and that they can become more successful and confident by learning how to use their strengths and preferred learning styles to reach their goals. The School is also proud of Camille, and in May 2013, she received the School's highest faculty honor: the Richardson Family Foundation Chair for Distinguished Teaching. What does the current year hold in store for the A.L.L.? Camille is finally getting an assistant, and she is "thrilled and beyond excited" that it is her daughter, Whitney, her first Pirate to attend Saint Edward's School.

SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT For several Saint Edward’s faculty, the summer of 2013 was an opportunity to engage in a professional development program that they had previously only dreamed of, thanks to the funding available from the Morrison Williams Waldrop Summer Stipend Endowed Fund.

Theater Director Maggie Baker travelled to New York City for a workshop presented by Music Theatre International. The three days of workshops geared towards High School and college theatre teachers and directors offered 30 hours of course work on topics as varied as auditioning for colleges, teaching Shakespeare to children, tips on using wireless body microphones in productions, makeup design taught by the makeup designer of “Wicked” and many other Broadway shows. In addition to classes, Mrs. Baker also attended four Broadway musicals, complete with talk-backs with the cast. Terry Mitchell (right), History teacher, Department Chair and Director of the Advanced Studies Program, spent seven weeks in Thailand expanding his understanding of the culture, history and geography of the country while at the same time being immersed in intensive Thai language study. ”I spent many hours this summer contemplating the 17 forms of the first pronoun “I” and 19 forms of the second pronoun “you”, Terry explained. “It is important to understand these distinctions in order to understand the complexity of Thai society.” Terry also took the opportunity to continue his charitable work in rural Thailand that included rice planting and a visit to a rural school district. History teacher Greg Zugrave was one of 40 teachers selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities from 29 different states to attend the “Gullah Voices: Traditions and Transformations” workshop held in Savannah, GA. Mr. Zugrave spent time exploring the rich culture and history of Savannah, with a focus on African-American history and culture. Upper School English teacher Louise Kennedy completed coursework at Sewanee, The University of the South for her Masters of Arts in Literature. Courses she pursued this summer were Ancient Greek in translation with inspiring classics professor Chris McDonough, and a non-fiction workshop with highly regarded National Geographic author Neil Shea. Lower School Technology teacher Joanie Wachter designed and coordinated a workshop for 20 Saint Edward’s teachers (left) led by an Apple Education Consultant who spent the day discussing the many ways iPads can be used effectively in the classrooms. Upper School Science teacher Kerryane Monahan developed a working guide to support SES students across the research process. The science fair guide brings together numerous resources and puts them all in one place to provide a reference for students and parents to help them through the process as smoothly and successfully as possible. The culminating piece of this project will be the virtual science fair hall: a website to showcase SES students' results and electronic posters for the school community. It will also be a place to celebrate the amazing and impressive research that our students conduct at home, in the field, in school, and in research institutions.

Charting Our Course THE DIFFERENCE IS EXTRAORDINARY!

AN UPDATE ON OUR STRATEGIC PLAN Significant progress and, in some cases, completion of the six imperatives of the School’s strategic plan has left an indelible mark on Saint Edward’s School, shaping who we are today as one community with three distinct and vital divisions meeting the needs of four different groups of children through a pre-school program, a Lower School, Middle School and Upper School. Saint Edward’s emerges from the last strategic planning period stronger than ever, and now embarks upon a new plan with a sense of vitality that comes from shaping the future we want versus playing the cards we have been dealt. Last spring, the Board of Trustees and leadership, with input from parents, faculty and students, met to consider the initiatives that will define the School’s next strategic plan. While the plan is due out this fall, one thing is certain – the growth of Saint Edward’s endowment will occupy a central place in the plan. Nowhere is the need for endowment more clear that when one considers the future financial needs of Saint Edward’s students in the coming years. The establishment of a solid endowment in the area of financial aid for students will be one of our most challenging priorities and one of the School’s most rewarding endeavors to carry the School into the next decade. We look forwarding to sharing more of the School’s plan in the coming months. In the meantime, for more information on the School’s endowment initiatives, please contact Anne Storch at astorch@ steds.org or call her at 772-231-5192.

History of a Green Girl EVA FINKELSTEIN, CLASS OF ’81 by Linda Konrad

How does one go from teaching elementary school to brain surgery to starting a green business?

teaching first grade! After two years, Eva decided she needed to devote time to the three little brains at home.

If you ask Eva (Hooshmand) Finkelstein ’81, she’ll tell you her convoluted history makes perfect sense. Eva believes “History” covers all the bases: all subjects, skills, personalities and events. Studying History helps one to branch out into other specialties with ease. It certainly did in her case.

Here’s where the northern winters had a say in Eva’s history. Unlike Florida homes that can be aired out in winter, buildings in Scarsdale, where Eva lives, are hermetically sealed in winter to keep out the cold. This prompted Eva to pay attention to the ingredients David, Kevin, Caroline, Eva ’81, Peter Finkelstein in cleaning products, the chemicals added to her children’s bedding and all the things Eva studied History and Pre-Med at the College of the leaking formaldehyde. The realization hit her like a spark from Holy Cross, finished her BA in History at the University the nylon carpeting: her home was full of toxins! Thus, Eva of Florida and went on to get a Master’s in Education there. Finkelstein, Green Girl was born. She turned her microscope Eva says she was born to teach. “Ask my sisters,” she says. on her home and then the planet. “I would hold classes almost daily in an extra room in our house that I made into a classroom.” Eva’s sisters, In 2010, Eva turned her passion into Green Design Expo, Zara Myers ’83 and Mary Margaret Trent ’84, are also LLC (GDE). GDE focuses on green, sustainable building SES grads and still live in Vero Beach. Eva married a and lifestyle products. You’ll find things like bamboo rugs, northerner and fellow University of Florida alumnus, Peter wool bedding, coconut shell wall tiles and LED lighting. Finkelstein, who had inherited two successful auto supply Eva, a LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and stores in New York state, so Eva said good-bye to Vero’s mild Environmental Design) instructor, educates architects winters and moved north. She taught Middle School in green design in the hope that this information History at Greenwich Academy and then first grade in will trickle down to commercial and residential end-users. the Chappaqua Central School District. Eva says this trickle-down is a slow process, but the response Soon three children joined the Finkelstein family and to maintain her sanity, Eva escaped into her studies and finished the Pre-Med courses at Holy Cross. Since her father was a neurosurgeon, Eva had been raised around lots of fun brain models (a few real ones), books on disease, and frequent visits to watch surgeries. So the next step for multi-faceted Eva was animal neuroscience research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University and clinical human research in the emergency room at Jacobi Medical Center. Eva is certain of one thing: performing brain surgery on mice is a lot easier than 14

by the younger generation has been very rewarding. When asked what role Saint Edward’s played in her history, Eva responds, “I cannot even imagine what my life would be like without the foundation and support that Saint Edward’s gave me. I have countless memories

of friends who were like family; events that were fantastic milestones; teachers, coaches and administrators who taught me how to work and live as a confident, loving, successful, whole, and even spiritual person. These values, along with a love of learning, guide every decision I make today.”

Greetings

FROM BOARD CHAIR RON EDWARDS

Dear Saint Edward’s School Community: The Pirate Spirit continues to be stronger than ever. This year, there was abundant evidence of the energy and the enthusiasm this community has to fully live out the mission of Saint Edward’s School. From calendars packed with arts and athletic activities, to academic competitions and learning projects that ranged from Lagoon excursions to shark dissections, this year was marked by one of the most significant milestones in the School’s history – an amazing 93% of our families re-enrolled, resulting in a record low attrition of six percent. Parents, students, faculty, staff and the School’s Board are moving the School forward in amazing ways. This fall, we reached a new high in the number of new students enrolled, and we are enrolling international students from a diversity of countries from four continents. As one who played an integral role in the last strategic plan, it is very rewarding to see the hard work of many individuals, donors and families bear fruit. Looking ahead, the Board is enthusiastically repeating the strategic planning process to set goals for the next five-year period. We do this with a much greater sense of all that is possible for the School to achieve in the next five years and with an understanding that growth of the School’s endowment is imperative. This growth will add to our financial aid program and ultimately stabilize tuition levels and enrollment. I look forward to sharing this plan with you and I look forward to your enthusiastic support of Saint Edward’s School. Sincerely, Ronald Edwards Chairman of the Board

Advancement Achievements WITH SINCERE THANKS

The past year’s focus groups from our marketing project and the strategic planning process with parents, alumni, students and grandparents gave us many positive and constructive insights into our Saint Edward’s School community. The feedback, once again, speaks to the high academic standards, the real sense of community within the School, and the great hope for a bright future. Our community is strengthened not only by great leadership but the ongoing support from our donors. Amid the continued challenging economic times, we are inspired by the generous spirit of all those who support the School. Before School even started, 100% of the faculty and staff along with the Board of Trustees had given to the Annual Fund. This is a remarkable testimony to their belief in our Mission. This past year, the Annual Fund received 666 gifts from parents, students, alumni, grandparents and friends of the School. Our parent participation was up 12% from last year at 62%. Together with the Annual Fund gifts and the proceeds of The Pirate Ball, the total Annual Giving was $1,309,567. Growing the endowment is a critical need to sustain the School. This year, we raised $645,888 to support our endowment. As we move forward, our highest priority will be to build an endowment for financial aid. This endowment will allow students of limited financial means the access to Saint Edward’s School forever. I am extremely grateful for all the thoughtful and generous support from all of you. Your commitment makes it possible for the School to provide all of its remarkable programs, and with your support, the future will be even brighter for Saint Edward’s School. Building Endowment

A STRONGER FUTURE FOR SAINT EDWARD’S SCHOOL

One of our highest priorities is to build the endowment which will move the School into the future. This past year, we were able to make strides in growing the endowment in the areas of faculty compensation, faculty professional development, and financial aid. The Morrison Williams Waldrop Summer Stipend Endowed Fund and the Brickman Foundation Endowed Faculty Chair provide great support to our teaching faculty. The Endowed Fund for Financial Aid will provide qualified students of limited financial means the opportunity to attend Saint Edward’s School. The Wachter Technology Fund continues to provide support to the School’s technology programs. We are grateful to all the donors who have contributed to these endowed funds.

Ways to Give

THE BENEDICT LEGACY SOCIETY The Benedict Legacy Society recognizes alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends who include provisions in their wills or estate plans to benefit Saint Edward’s School and have informed the School of their generosity. These provisions include bequest intentions, testamentary trusts, and gifts providing life income, life insurance, retirement plan assets, and other deferred gifts. Named for Nancy and Peter Benedict, Members of the Benedict Legacy Society are given a distinctive Benedict Society pin (shown left) that has become the visual identity of the Society.

If you have made a provision for Saint Edward’s in your will, or if you wish to explore the advantages of making an estate gift to the School, please contact: Anne Storch, Director of Advancement at 772-231-5192 or [email protected].
