F R I DAY IN VENICE A Transmedia Speculation about a Possible Europe
In « Friday in Venice, » a storytelling project by Michael Schindhelm, the fictional character Friday travels through Europe in search of innovative ideas about how to improve society. He arrives first at the European Parliament of Strasbourg, where 5.000 Europeans aged between 16 and 30 have gathered for the European Youth Event. It is just two weeks before the elections for the European Parliament. Friday will report on his subsequent explorations of the political and social status of the continent on the online platform www.lavapolis.com/ fridayinvenice. From July onwards, Friday will meet with visitors at the Architectural Biennale in Venice. Friday hails from an imaginary island society described in a frame story ( L AVAP O LIS , published by Sternberg Press, Berlin/ New York, and written by Michael Schindhelm ). Friday’s observations on the state of affairs in Europe during the 2014 parliamentary elections and the Italian European Union presidency — which he will broadcast to his audience through videos posted on the platform — will become part of both an assessment of Europe and a participatory online game that focuses on the possibility of achieving desirable social change on the continent. Juxtaposing the political realities of Europe and the heterotopia of Lavapolis will encourage a collective discourse. The discussion topics will specifically be relevant to a younger generation. The transmedia storytelling project « Friday in Venice » will be released in three different formats: – the book L AVAP O LIS (published in German by Matthes & Seitz and in English by Sternberg Press, both during the summer of 2014) – an interactive online platform (in English, www.lavapolis.com) – a performance at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale in Venice, Italy

The island of Lavapolis as social experiment The internet platform and the performances in Venice are based on a story about the fictional island of Lavapolis. This story is presented in the book L AVAP O LIS , which takes a look at an island that does not (yet) exist and reports on an experimental exchange of ideas related to the question: what is actually possible? The residents and visitors of Lavapolisdon’t amount to a sum. They contradict one another and only sometimes reach a consensus. In another world, they’d likely be enemies. But on reaching the island, they commence a life in a heterotopia that holds a mirror up to the outside world and opens it to criticism. A life in a time to come, possibly soon. When Friday leaves Europe for his heterotopian island of Lavapolis, he will bring with him a complex, contradictory, yet inspiring story about imagining a society that is different from our status quo. interactive installation Friday in Venice at the Corderie dell’Arsenale will enable exchange between the users of the online platform and visitors of the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale.
AUGUST 1 – 17 At
the invitation of the curator of the 14th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, Rem Koolhaas, Friday in Venice will unfold as a number of interactive shows held on weekends. Michael Schindhelm and Friday performer Gabor Bierdermann will moderate both in-person and online participants (amateurs and experts from different nations and generations) in discussions on relevant topics. These will have been previously debated as part of the online game that will occur on the website during Friday’s trip through Europe. The weekend shows will present and reward the most intense and controversial debates from the online platform.

F R I DAY IN VENEDIG Eine transmediale Spekulation über ein mögliches Europa
Friday in Venedig ist ein Erzählprojekt von Michael Schindhelm, in welchem die fiktive Gestalt Friday ab Mai 2014 eine Forschungsreise durch Europa unternimmt. Seine Ankunft erfolgt im Rahmen des European Youth Events im Europa parlament von Strasbourg. Von seinen anschliessenden Erlebnissen berichtet er im Internet, und ab Juli stößt Friday in Venedig auf die Besucher der Architekturbiennale von 2014. Die Figur Friday entstammt einer erfundenen Insel-Gesellschaft, die in einer Rahmengeschichte in Buchform erläutert wird. Friday stellt während seiner Reise politische und soziale Beobachtungen über die Situation Europas im Wahljahr 2014 an. Diese Beobachtungen bilden den Ausgangspunkt für eine transmediale Diskussion über die Möglichkeit eines wünschenswerten sozialen Wandels in Europa. In einer Gegenüberstellung von politischer Wirklichkeit und fiktiver Wünschbarkeit entsteht ein kollektiver Diskurs, dessen Themen besonders die jüngere Generation ansprechen und sich auch auf verwandte Gegenstände der Stadtpolitik und Urbanistik erstrecken. Das transmediale Erzählprojekt Friday in Venedig erscheinen parallel in drei verschiedenen Formaten: – im Buch L AVAP O LIS von Michael Schindhelm (Deutsch/Englisch; Verlag Matthes&Seitz (Deutsche Version; Sommer 2014), Verlag Sternberg Press (Englische Version; Sommer 2014) – als partizipative Diskussionsplattform im Netz (Englisch; www.lavapolis.com) – als Performance auf der Architekturbiennale in Venedig

Die Insel Lavapolis als soziales Labor Das Buch, das der Internet-Plattform und den Veranstaltungen in Venedig als Rückgrat und Inspirationsquelle dient, blickt auf eine Insel, die es nicht gibt, und berichtet von einem Gedanken-Versuch über die Frage: Was ist möglich? Die versammelten Bewohner und Besucher dieser Insel widersprechen sich und stimmen einander zu. In einer anderen Welt sind sie vielleicht Feinde. Doch mit der Landung auf der Insel werden sie Teil eines sozialen Projekts. Die gemeinsame Erwartung: Die Insel-Gesellschaft ermögliche Lebensentwürfe, die sich dank eines politischen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Experiments unaufhörlich erneuern. Die Administration der Insel nennt diese nach einem Konzept von Michel Foucault eine Heterotopie: Einen Gegenort, der die reale Welt sowohl zeigt, als auch infrage stellt. Der Europabesucher Friday ist einer der Bewohner dieser Insel und stellt auf der Webplattform www.lavapolis.com immer wieder Vergleiche an zwischen Europa und Lavapolis, zwischen Realität und Fiktion. 1. – 17. AUGUST Auf
Einladung von Kurator Rem Koolhaas wird Friday in Venedig als interaktive Show stattfinden. Die Corderie dell’Arsenale wird zwischen dem 1. und 17. August zur Bühne für Friday. Koolhaas wird persönlich an einer der Veranstaltungen mit wirken. Der Friday-Darsteller wird als Moderator agieren und Nutzer der Web-Plattform mit Besuchern der Biennale und eingeladenen, internationalen Experten für Debatten zusammenbringen. Dabei werden jene Themen gewürdigt werden, die auf der Plattform besonders intensiv und kontrovers diskutiert wurden.
