DAILY INVESTMENT UPDATE United States US markets ended higher on Thursday on the back of a sharp rebound in oil futures. The S&P 500 Index edged 0.52% higher with seven of its ten sectors closing positive. The energy, telecommunications and consumer-discretionary sectors led the advance. The Dow Jones gained 0.74%, while the technology-heavy NASDAQ Composite closed virtually unchanged.

Europe

China

European markets climbed on Thursday after ECB President Mario Draghi reassured investors that the European Central Bank's monetary policy may be loosened further, following a volatile start to the year.

Chinese stock markets gave back some of their earlier gains on Friday and looks set to test a new two-year low on the back of extremely bearish investor sentiment. The Hang Seng Index was supported by gains in energy shares, as investors gained confidence from a sharp overnight recovery in oil prices, as well as firmer global equity markets.

Local

Japan

The JSE All Share Index inched 0.10% lower on Thursday with the gold mining and the financial stocks leading the losers. Resources and platinum mining stocks led the gainers. The local bourse traded marginally weaker for most of the day before recovering somewhat when Wall Street opened firmer. Market sentiment also improved on the back of firmer European markets.

The Nikkei Index surged more than 5% on Friday, recouping most of its losses from the past two trading sessions. Market sentiment was boosted by a weaker yen, a recovery in oil prices and the possibility of more stimulus measures from the ECB.

Rand

Precious Metals

Oil

The rand strengthened slightly against the dollar on Thursday afternoon, having traded mostly in a narrow range after showing little reaction to the ECB’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged at a record low of 0.05%. The rand was last trading at R16.4993 against the US dollar, R17.8793 against the euro and R23.4414 against the British pound.

The gold price edged lower in Asian trade on Friday after the euro fell following the potential of further monetary policy easing by the ECB amid turmoil in global equity markets and slowing economic growth in emerging markets. Gold was last trading at $1 099.24, with platinum at $824.92 and palladium at $502.00.

Oil prices climbed for a second trading session on Friday, rebounding off 12-year lows reached earlier this week. Cold weather in the US and Europe, as well as stronger equity markets provided some traders reasons to close out their short positions. Brent crude oil was last quoted at $29.74 a barrel.

JANUARY 2016

Sector focus JSE ALSI 40 Index The JSE ALSI 40 Index inched 0.16% lower on Thursday with the benchmark index price still trading far below a key resistance trend line. The index price is also still trading below both its 50 and 200 day moving averages and the long term trend remains bearish. Both the Stochastic and RSI indicators are still moving lower towards oversold levels. A bearish candlestick body was formed because the index price closed lower than it opened. This same candle is called a spinning top as it has a small real body. Spinning tops identify a trading session in which there is little price action (as defined by the difference between the open and the close). During a correction or near new lows, a spinning top can be a sign that the bears may be in trouble.

JANUARY 2016

Trade Spotlight: CFD & SSF Resilient (RES) The share price of Resilient gained 0.96% on Thursday with the share price testing a key support trend line, which is close to 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level. The share price is also still trading both its 50 & 200 day moving averages. The long term trend, however, remains bullish as the 50 day moving average has not crossed below the 200 day moving average as yet. Both the Stochastic and RSI indicators are still moving lower towards oversold levels but there are still no clear bullish signals.
