DAILY INVESTMENT UPDATE United States The S&P 500 ended lower on Wednesday for a seventh straight session, as the Federal Reserve signalled it could hike interest rates in December and the uncertain US election continued to cloud the market's outlook. The US central bank held interest rates steady, but said the economy had gained steam and job gains remained solid, expressing more optimism that inflation was moving toward its 2% target.
Hong Kong
Europe European shares were on track for their eighth straight day of losses on Wednesday, falling on jitters ahead of the US presidential election next week and a drop in A.P. MollerMaersk after its results were released. The STOXX 600 index dropped 0.5%.
Hong Kong stocks pared early losses on Thursday after a survey showed China's services sector grew at its fastest pace in four months, but gains were capped by worries over the tightening US presidential election race. The Hang Seng index dipped 0.1% by midday.

The JSE closed more than 1% weaker on Wednesday, in line with global markets tumbling on investor concern about Republican Donald Trump taking the lead in polls a week before the US presidential election. The JSE was also caught up in volatile trade before former public protector Thuli Madonsela’s report on state capture was finally released on Wednesday by court order.
Tokyo markets are closed today due to public holiday.

The rand was stronger against major global currencies on Wednesday afternoon as the market awaited the release of the public protector’s state capture report. The first news filtering through from the report indicates that former public protector Thuli Madonsela has ordered that President Jacob Zuma to appoint a judicial inquiry into state capture. At 16h13, the rand was at R13.35 to the dollar from Tuesday’s R13.59.
Gold rose on Thursday as uncertainty over the outcome of the US election upheld the safe-haven demand for bullion and weakened the dollar, offsetting signals from the Federal Reserve that it could hike interest rates in December. Spot gold rose 0.5% to $1 303.42/oz.
Crude oil futures rose on Thursday as an attack on a Nigerian oil pipeline and a weaker US dollar buoyed sentiment in the market, lifting prices from fiveweek lows. Brent crude was trading up 51 cents at $47.37 a barrel.
