DAILY INVESTMENT UPDATE United States Wall Street treaded water on Thursday following two days of strong gains as advancing utilities offset declines in materials, banks and other cyclical industries. After gaining 2% over the previous two sessions, the S&P 500 traded flat, with a 1.1% dip in the materials index partly offset by a 1.06% rise in utilities.
Hong Kong
Europe European shares steadied on Thursday, with banks coming under pressure after a surprise rights issue by Spain's Banco Popular fuelled fears others in the region may follow to strengthen their balance sheets. The pan-European STOXX Europe 600 was little changed, while the FTSEurofirst 300 added 0.1%.
Chinese stocks slipped on Friday as April industrial profit data added to concerns that a recent pick-up in the economy may be short-lived. Both China's bluechip CSI300 index and the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.3%. The Hang Seng index and the Hong Kong China Enterprises Index both dipped 0.1%.
Japan
Local
Japanese stocks rose in thin trade on Friday morning amid steady yen weakness and media reports that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would delay by two years a sales tax hike scheduled to go into effect in April 2017. The Nikkei share average edged up 0.4% in the morning session.
Japanese stocks were up while Chinese stocks were down on Friday morning, giving mixed signals if the JSE would maintain the past week’s run which has seen its all share index gain 3%. Markets were jittery ahead of a speech by the US Federal Reserve chair on Friday in Harvard at 8h15 South African time. The JSE closed at its best 2016 level yesterday as higher commodity prices caused miners to firm in a global risk-on environment.
Rand
Precious Metals
Oil
The rand continued on its firmer trajectory against the dollar late on Thursday, after a rally by the latter faded ahead of a speech by US Federal Reserve chairwoman Janet Yellen on Friday.
Gold dipped to its lowest level in almost eight weeks on Friday, with positive economic data boosting expectations that US interest rates will rise. Spot gold had dipped 0.3% to $1 216.50 per ounce.
Oil futures slipped in Asian trade on Friday after hitting resistance at the $50 a barrel mark as investors worried higher prices could reactivate shuttered crude output, adding to global oversupply. Brent fell 36 cents to $49.23 by 06h02 GMT on Friday.
