DAILY INVESTMENT UPDATE United States Wall Street stocks closed at record highs on Monday, boosted by expectations for continued monetary policy easing around the globe and a jump in oil prices to nearly five-week highs on speculation that top producers may be open to cutting output. The S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq stock indexes all closed at alltime highs.
Hong Kong
Europe European stocks climbed to their highest level in seven weeks on Monday, supported by firmer healthcare stocks after Belgian pharmaceuticals group UCB won a favourable US court ruling. The panEuropean STOXX 600 index touched 347.54 points, its highest since late June, before ending flat.
Chinese stocks pulled back from seven-month highs on Tuesday as a correction in bank shares offset continued strength in the property sector. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.5%.

Japan Japan's Nikkei dropped to a more than one-week low on Tuesday as selling accelerated in late trade after the dollar hit a one-month low against the yen. The Nikkei dropped 1.6%, the lowest closing level since 5 August.
The JSE looked set for another red day on Tuesday after falling 0.77% on Monday. The world’s biggest mining company, BHP Billiton, is scheduled to release its results for the year to end-June on Tuesday. Analysts expect BHP to report its first loss since its creation in 2001.

Oil
The rand was firmer against the dollar on Monday afternoon after the greenback weakened, as investors expected no interest-rate increase by the US Federal Reserve before the US presidential election. At 15h31, the rand was at R13.3356 to the dollar from R13.4668 at the previous close.
Gold rose for a second day on Tuesday as the dollar slipped on lower expectations of a US Federal Reserve interest rate hike this year due to mixed macro-economic signals in the world's largest economy. Spot gold was up about 0.6% at $1 346.31 an ounce.
Oil prices edged away from five-week highs on Tuesday, with traders cashing in on a 16% rally since early August that has largely been fuelled by talks of producers taking action to prop up the market. International Brent crude oil futures were trading at $48.14 per barrel.
