CHAOS MOTION Experimental/Avant-Garde Death Metal [ENGLISH VERSION SEE BELOW]

[ENGLISH VERSION] Technical death metal has since long found a solid following, here in Europe as well as in many other countries all over the world. CHAOS MOTION represents this international connection: the musicians involved are rooted in Mexico as well as in France. We talked to CHAOS MOTION's drummer Juan Pablo Muñoz. Juan Pablo, cheers to you and thanks for agreeing on having this interview with us! CHAOS MOTION is you on drums, Guillermo González on Guitars and Vocals, Alexis Tedde on Guitars and Guido Pedicone on Bass. Would you briefly outline the idea behind the group and the band's

history? CHAOS MOTION was formed in 2007 in León, Mexico, under the name of NEBULAR VISION. We recorded one EP called "Fractal Dimension" in September 2008 and one MLP called "In-Existence" in 2009, we played some gigs supporting some europeans bands in Mexico, we also played at the Uriangato Open Air Festival, Underground Fest and some other places. After this recordings and gigs, I decided to change the name to CHAOS MOTION because of the new musical ideas and concepts I had, obviously more chaotic ha ha…, well in fact I really see this like an organized chaos with a lot of influences of contemporary music. The music is becoming more experimental as well as more dissonant and with more complex rhythms with deepest emotions. Extreme as possible! So, since then we have recorded two new demos/pre-productions and a promotional video of the band. Which bands would you cite as your major influences and what does your music draw from these? How did you get into playing Technical Death Metal in the first place? Well, good question ha ha... I started listening to heavy metal when I was very young, maybe seven or eight years old, but some years later I switched to thrash and speed metal, yes! I can name a lot of bands who touched me but maybe the must influencial at the moment was SLAYER, but well, around 1989 I started to listen to grind and death metal bands because of the big explosion of groups in the genre, like CARCASS, CARNAGE, XYSMA, DISGRACE, THOU SHALT SUFFER, DARK THRONE, TRAUMATIC, GORGUTS, PURULENCE, CREMATORY, NECRONY, CENOTAPH, SHUB NIGGURATH, LUBRICANT, SADISTIK EXECUTION, NUCLEAR DEATH, etc... I think above all, what more impregnated me was the originality and heavy sound that these bands had at that time, you know. Besides this music I always listened to progressive music because of my interest in drums, bands like RUSH, KING CRIMSON, CAMEL, etc..., or experimental music like PINK FLOYD (1st period), MAGMA, THE FLYING LUTTENBACHERS, etc..., I think all of this explains why I got into complex or technical music. But I have to say that my latest influences came from contemporary music, in particular spectral music or extreme music, composers like Gérard Grisey, Fausto Romitelli or Helmut Lachenmann amongst others... So, basically my influences comes from extreme old-school death metal, progressive/experimental music and contemporary music. Yeah!!! All of the members of CHAOS MOTION are advanced musicians, not only in metallic terms but also in regards to classical and contemporary music and jazz. Does this background have an impact on the way you are composing? Which other instruments do or did you guys play? Yes, you know Alexis is not only guitarist, he studied clarinette from a very young age and he is a very good instrumentalist, he studied at the conservatory of Paris and also in Strasbourg were I met him, I was studying composition and piano at the conservatory at that time. Same case for Guido Pedicone, he is a multi-instrumentalist who plays bass, guitar, drums, piano, etc...and he is studying electroacoustic music, also at the conservatory of Strasbourg. And at last Guillermo of course, well, he is our Jazz man ha ha... also a multi-instrumentalist, he has been studying jazz and improvisational music for a couple of years, and he also plays in several metal related projects at the moment. And well, I have to say that working with musicians like this is great, really, now I feel there are no limits, our approach of music is the richest, the technical possibilities and composition complexity are more expanded, this always evolves a band I think.. How does a typical repetition unfold? Are you composing while you're jamming together or does everybody work out possible ideas at home already? And how do you decide if a tune has enough potential for your standards? Well, we rehearse 3hrs, three times per week you know, normally we make a little jam moment to warm up, but this is not the way of composition. In fact I compose all the music on my own except for the guitar solos made by Guillermo, and also Alexis has composed some samples for the new album (intro/intermezzo/outro). At first, each one of us works his scores at home, and then we put all this together at the rehearsal, we work on the improvisational parts together also, we listen to the result and if there is something to be improved, we do that. So, tell us a little about your current releases and the projects CHAOS MOTION is working on. For the moment we are concentrating on rehearsals, we are booking concerts for 2015 around Europe where we will play all our new stuff, we will press a single of a song titled "Psychotic Spasm“ for promotion and we will contact labels for putting out the entire album. Juan Pablo, your origins lie in Mexico, but you've been living in France for a long time now. If you

compare the metal scene in Latin America to Europe, is there a difference? You know, I think in the end music is a universal language, people are always very receptive, headbanging and slamming is inevitable in all places, also a lot of beer ha ha! Maybe we have to say that it is true that in the underground scene for metal in Latin America it is very rare to have good equipment, I think that is much better here, but concerning big festivals it is the same, a big scene and crazy audience ha...! Now, I'm sure you'd like to play some concerts and present your project to the public eye, but how to get in contact with CHAOS MOTION? Here are the links: www.chaos-motion.com www.facebook.com/chaosmotionband www.twitter.com/chaosmotionband Thanks a lot for this nice brief view into your world! Is there anything you'd like to add, something we forgot about? Thanks for the interview!!! And all fanzines, radio stations, labels, etc... get in touch!!! We promise to deliver the craziest and heaviest death metal in the world!!!
